About the internship
Mechanical Design Intern (CAD + Prototyping)
Role Overview
We are looking for hands-on Mechanical Design Interns to work on new product R&D. This role focuses on real-world product hardware development including mechanical design, enclosure development, design iterations, and rapid prototyping.
This is not a drafting-only position interns will contribute directly to functional product development and work closely with electronics and hardware teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. CAD Design (Primary Responsibility)
Create 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or AutoCAD (3D).
Design components such as:
Plastic enclosures
Mounting brackets and structural parts
PCB mounting systems
Mechanical support structures
Prepare:
Detailed manufacturing drawings with dimensions and tolerances
Mechanical Bills of Materials (BOM)
2. Product R&D Support
Convert concept sketches and ideas into 3D models
Perform design iterations considering:
Electronics integration
Fitment constraints
Cable routing
Assembly feasibility
Conduct basic design validation:
Interference checks
Assembly simulations
Tolerance awareness
3. Rapid Prototyping & 3D Printing
Export and prepare STL files for 3D printing
Decide print orientation and support strategy
Operate and monitor FDM 3D printers
Perform post-processing:
Support removal
Surface finishing
Fitment testing
Maintain revision tracking of prototypes.
4. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Basics
Apply practical mechanical design principles such as:
Proper wall thickness for plastic parts
Fillets, ribs, and draft angles
Screw bosses and fastening strategies
Avoid non-manufacturable geometries
Understand the difference between prototype design and production-ready design.
Required Skills
Strong knowledge of SolidWorks or Fusion 360 (AutoCAD acceptable only with strong 3D skills)
Experience with parametric 3D modeling and assemblies
Basic understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals
Knowledge of 3D printing fundamentals
Ability to prepare manufacturing drawings
Preferred Skills (Advantage)
Experience designing enclosures for electronic products
Understanding of tolerances and fits
Knowledge of fasteners and mechanical joining methods
Exposure to thermal design basics
Experience with hardware projects (robotics, drones, automotive, etc.)
Basic knowledge of sheet metal or CNC design
Exposure to FEA tools
Internship Duration
Minimum 6 months
Pre-Placement Opportunity (PPO)
Outstanding interns may receive a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) for a full-time Mechanical Design Engineer role based on their performance, learning ability, and contribution to product development during the internship.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the candidate should be able to:
Independently design production-feasible mechanical parts
Deliver complete 3D models and manufacturing drawings
Build and test prototypes using 3D printing
Support mechanical development of new hardware products
