Jensen JSMP-8GBJA (MP3 Player) Protection!
DESCRIPTION
Do you have one of these media players? There's two in our lives, and they deserve a little protection!
As there's nothing available for this specific model, necessity once again became the mother of invention. Only, I didn't exactly invent so much as re-purpose protective cases intended for another device altogether!
So you'll actually need to buy a case or two, but at least they're pretty cheap. Then we'll be hacking them up a bit.
What? Did you expect me to knit something? Short of modding an old sock, that's not gonna happen!
The following six steps deal with the silicone case. The four after that with the "leather" case. Yeah, I should have combined content on fewer steps but this is my first time!
You'll need:
One or both cases for Samsung F480i phone
Hobby knife
Sandpaper or round file
Sharp scissors
Okay, so let's assume you've got the silicone sleeve thingy for the Samsung F480i. Doesn't matter where it's from, just don't pay too much for them 'cos they should be cheap! Try eBay or maybe a local store. I couldn't find any locally, so AUD $4.75 got me two of these posted. Not bad!
The Jensen screen is identical in size to the Samsung, but the phone has more overhang either side. Also, as the Jensen power buttons and USB are at the end piece (on the far right of this pic) I feel this is the best place to cut.
Test fit your player first as you may prefer to cut the other side, or not to cut at all. You'll lose about 5mm of screen if you don't though.
I didn't have good blades for my hobby knife or scalpel, so I impatiently used scissors.
You could do this if you like, but remember this is soft silicone that deforms easily. Getting a straight cut is harder than you think!
This is the area previously mentioned where the USB and power buttons will need to be accessible. Let's cut some more!
Okay, so maybe you're thinking "where's the USB jack?". Or maybe "why is this so out of focus?".
The USB jack is on the left of shot, roughly in line with my thumb. I chose not to cut this area, as it's easy enough to slip the silicone off on one side to plug in. Anyway, I don't plan on changing much once I've added the tracks I need. I also plan to use this in my pocket, and the less lint and fluff gets in there, the better.
Depending on the quality of the silicone you have, you could probably cut the extra length without affecting things too much.
It's out of focus because either my camera sucks or I do. Take your pick.
Pretty easy - just try to cut neater than I managed.
So here it is, a bit safer from scratches.
They included a basic screen protector, but mine started lifting at the edges. The Samsung F480i protector, or pretty much any 7cm (2.8") protector will do.
The white foam is used to prevent movement. Remember the Samsung phone is approx 5mm longer than the Jensen. In all other respects, the fit is nice and snug.
This version was done for my girlfriend, who wanted to use her player in her handbag. As these are mysterious places filled with razor sharp hazards, I went in search of some protection.
No such protection existed :(
So once again (actually they were purchased in the same transaction) I set forth to make, or buy (and break) something suitable.
This case is from an eBay trader purchased for $6 shipped. For this Jensen player, it opens to the left. Others are available that open vertically, but she preferred this type.
Click your Jensen into the plastic cradle and slide it away from the spine. The headphone jack should line up with the area I've noted. Use a permanent marker as a guide for removal of the plastic. You don't want to lose too much, as the top edge will be quite thin once we're done. Don't want it to break!
Using a hobby knife, gently scrape and peel this area of plastic. Don't rush, do a little at a time. Carefully wipe/blow the shavings away and test fit the Jensen every now and then. Keep going until it looks right, then test that your headphone plug can be inserted all the way.
An optional cut is just to the left of the USB port, but there's just enough space for me to ensure a connection. I figured, why cut more than I need to? It already looks ghetto enough!
With this particular case, the Jensen clicks in perfectly and is gripped pretty tight! You can slide it back and forth, but it takes some effort.
It's the usual 'insert one side, click in the other' kind of deal. Pretty straight-forward.
Removal is a little trickier. You need to pry and lift carefully!
That little gap to the left is filled with some foam (supplied with case). This is then slit up the middle for the stylus to nestle in there.
I've fitted a MicroSD card by first releasing the player and slotting it in. Thankfully, it sits about 1mm inside the players casing (even better than flush). Therefore, the player snaps back into the cradle without any clearance issues.
If you *must* have easier access to the memory card, a further 8mm will need to be cut from the side cradle (bottom of pic).
